A crown is a tooth-filling mechanism that completely surrounds and covers a properly prepared tooth fragment or implant and is secured with a special dental glue.

When do we use dental crowns?

• In the case of extensive tooth decay, when a simple filling or inlay/onlay will not solve the problem
• In the case of a worn down occlusal surface

When is there a need for a dental bridge?

We make bridges when one or more tooth needs to be compensated for or replaced. Here, the teeth directly beside the missing teeth serve as bridge pillars. A bridge is advantageous because it sets the supporting teeth in line.

What materials are crowns and bridges made from?

1. Metal-ceramic

This is the most commonly used material for making crows and bridges. A ceramic coating, which matches the color of the tooth, is fired onto a metal frame at high temperatures. Its advantages are that it seals well, it is exact, and, it is durable, and, due to the ceramic coating, it can be adjusted to match the exact color of the original tooth. A drawback is that, over time, a receding gumline can expose the metal layer under the coating.

2. Zirconium-ceramic

Zirconium is used to avoid allergic reactions or to achieve a higher level of aesthetic quality. It also has several other benefits:

• zirconium dioxide crowns are stronger than metal-ceramic crowns
• its appearance is very close to the tooth’s natural color, white
• there is no grey gumline
• it ensures translucency similar to that of natural teeth
• metal allergies cannot cause problems
• the frame is constructed CAD-CAM computer programs, so it is perfectly precise and accurate

Aside from these materials, a fixed frame can be made from gold, titanium, only ceramic, or even special composite materials.
