A sinus lift is a surgical procedure that belongs to the category of bone replacement surgeries as it replaces the bone of the upper jawbone.

There is usually only a couple millimeter distance between the bottom surface of the sinus and the tip of the roots of teeth. Sometimes it occurs that the roots of the molar teeth penetrate the sinus.

When is a sinus lift necessary?

When molars are removed, the thickness of the bone between the sinus and the mucous membrane gradually decreases. This is because after molar removal, the area no longer receives pressure and thus begins to get resorbed, making an implant impossible.

Through the process of the sinus lift, we raise the the mucous membrane and fill the space with bone replacement. We can then insert the implant into the space reinforced by the bone replacement material.

Bone replacement surgeries are very low-risk and not burdensome, but depending on the amount of bone replaced, the healing process can take up to a couple of months. This determines when the next oral surgery can take place, i.e. when the implant can be inserted.
