The field of oral surgery also includes bone replacement, which is an intervention that requires a high level of specialization. It's a common problem that there isn't enough bone for an implant because part of the bone got resorbed, thus the artificial implant's root would not have a stable foundation to secure itself in.

Why is there not enough bone?

Most of the time this happens when teeth are lost. The chewing function of teeth preserves the bone, so when teeth are lost, the layer of bone starts to thin and be resorbed. Of course there are other situations that cause bone thinning (periodontal diseases, osteoporosis, cysts, tumors, etc.). However, because of the advances in oral surgery, we have solutions to these problems, and it's in these situations that bone replacement is needed.

Today oral surgeons can choose from a variety of different bone replacement materials, depending on how sever the bone resorption is:

  • Synthetic bone material
  • Animal bone material
  • The patient's own bone material
  • A combination of these

Bone replacement materials stimulate bone tissue formation by creating a frame for the patient's own bone material that will gradually appear. The bone replacement will slowly disappear from the newly forming bone, and the new tissue's structure and function will be in accordance with the original bone.
