Thanks to the rapid development of dentistry, if we hear about fillings we no longer think about the old grey amalgam fillings, but aesthetic fillings that match the tooth’s color. Nowadays, dentists aim to use less metal, using ceramic or plastic alloys instead.

What is a composite filling?

A composite filling is made up of ceramic and resin mixture. This material’s hardness is close to that tooth enamel, thus it is sturdy, durable, withstands wear, and withstands chewing forces. You can also create larger fillings with it.

Is replacement of an amalgam filling necessary?

It is often heard that amalgam fillings are toxic to the body due to their mercury content, and this is why their replacement is necessary. The debate flares up from time to time between those who oppose and those who use amalgam. It is essential to note that old types of amalgam contain so-called gamma phases, due to which the crystal structure changes with time. The filling can rise out of the filling hole (this is why we can see completely smooth patches on its surface, for the opposite tooth constantly chisels it down). This causes the filling to separate from the tooth and make room for bacteria.

The replacement of badly sealed, old amalgam fillings with modern, color-matching composite fillings is always recommended.

Does it matter what we replace the filling with?

  • Smaller holes can easily be filled with composite (tooth-colored, cured) fillings.
  • Larger holes can be can be filled with inlays (inserts created by a dental technician) to prevent problems caused by a shrinking of filling material.
  • When a large portion of the tooth is missing, especially if the tooth needs root treatment, crowns are the best solution.
